She Made It Easy To Love Her

by Graeme Sutherland

I rest with her. A leopard’s gaze
Unites two halves of space,
We share a drink; or was it cake?
I’ve crumbs all on my face.

My brain runs still; she laughs and smiles,
Our wordless talks align,
It is not air we’re breathing,
But calm; a silent shrine.

Her eyes flash grey; a question froths
then softens in the light:
I don’t get it; Why here? Why now?
Why did you choose tonight?

I inhale a hush, I look around,
I shrug into her gaze.
We never got to come here then,
In those harsh fevered days

Warm life around me flickers,
Its comfort folds with mine,
We stay a while and ponder,
And still away the time.
