Girse

Turning her usually anthropocentric eye towards nature’s glory, Hannah Nicholson renders a calm, dewy morning with bright air and Girse.

Hit’s a cöl, bright voar moarnin’

Whan I step oot intae da back green

Wearin’ juist me night claes

An’ me bare feet. Da sun hings idda sky

Bright an’ shinin’ abön me,

An’ atween me taes an’ on me soles

I kin feel da dew drops

Comin’ aff o’ da girse.

Whin I wis peerie, hit wis said

At you were meant tae drink

Da first o’ da dew drops

Whin you fan dem idda girse

An’ on da flooers,

But da wye at dey feel

An’under your feet

Is cöl an’ soothin’

Eftir ower lang inside.

Hit’s a feelin’ I’m ta’en fir granted

Ower aften, an’ eftir bein’ kept inside

Fir dis lang, even juist steppin oot

In me bare feet in me ain back green

Is a sensation I nivver thocht

I wid come tae appreciate so much.

I’ll geng back inside in a peerie while,

But fir eanoo, I’ll indulge in an earthly pleasure.
